There is no specific age for going into depression. From a high school student to retired person can get depressed and the phase last longer or may lead to a disastrous outcome if it is not cured at the root. The depression is a mental state in which person goes into his own shell, it can happen for many reasons or no reason at all. It may start with a trivial reason and you loss control on it and snow balls into a phase where nothing feels OK. Every person handles differently but, the result is the same which is to make a person incapacitated in terms of positive thinking. It may be argued that the person himself or herself should come out of it. But, unless there a drastic change in the circumstance in a positive direction, the depression will consume the person into submission.
For a student, it is usually the exam or exams result or making new friends in new school or a course which is beyond their comprehension. It starts as a frustration and if the external pressure from peers or family increases, then turns into depression. There are triggers for a depressed person which prevents any kind of recovery from it. If the exam result is the cause, the phase may last until the next exam that too if there is a positive result. Also, the triggers like parent or peer taunting and reprimand may take them into more depressed state. However, recognizing the depression early by the parents or counselor may bring them out of it through positive reinforcement and encouragement to do better in the next exam. It is important to provide the right positive guidance for the persons under depression at the early stages to help them just snap out of it. The more time they are left alone, time to recover would be longer and if one does not come out of it then there could be disastrous result like attempt to suicide.
